Brown Snake (Storeia dekayi) Non-Venomous The Brown Snake is also known as the Dekay’s Snake. It’s a very small species that rarely exceeds 13” in length. It’s very common to find Brown Snakes under mulch and leaf litter around homes where they search for their primary prey of slugs and worms. They are often mistaken for copperheads even though Brown snakes bare no resemblance. Brown Snakes are a protected species. This means that it’s illegal to harm them and possessing one is prohibited.
