The Eastern Garter Snake Thamnophis sirtalis

Not all garter snakes look like the one in the photo. This snake can vary in pattern and color. This snake usually has three stripes on top of a darker background color that run lengthwise down the body. The stripes can vary in color from yellow to green or brown. The under belly can also vary from yellow to white or a greenish color. Some specimens may also have a checkerboard pattern on the sides. Though this snake may sometimes bite when handled it is considered harmless to people. The eastern gater snake is many times found to be near water sources where it can find an abundance of fish and amphibians which are its primary food. This snake may also consume mice, other snakes, lizards and even small birds. The eastern garter snakes saliva is mildly toxic which helps in securing its meals. If a human is bitten they may experience a mild itch at the site of the bite. Baby garter snakes which look just like the adults, are born live in numbers of up to 100 at a time.
